Bad for your teeth? Nonsense! - Why straws are good for oral motor skills

Schlecht für die Zähne? Von wegen! - Warum Strohhalme gut für die Mundmotorik sind

Recently, a concerned customer came to my children's store, who was unsure about letting her child drink from a straw bottle. Since I had never heard of this concern before, I let her explain and asked why she had this idea. She had heard that drinking from a straw was bad for teeth.

As a mother and educator, I have learned a lot over the past decades, especially when it comes to the development of our little ones, and so I was able to immediately alleviate her concern and even tell her why I find straws so valuable for children. And today I want to tell you about it too, because: Straws are a real game-changer for our children's oral motor skills. Sounds crazy, right? Then let me explain why they are so valuable.

The Magic Formula: Straws and Oral Muscles

In my years as an educator, I have worked closely with speech therapists. Their tips and tricks were invaluable, especially when it came to strengthening the oral motor skills of our little ones. And you know what they always emphasized? The incredible importance of straws! Whether we consciously made bubbles in a glass, blew cotton balls across the table with a straw, created blown paint monsters with watercolors, or simply comfortably drank from a straw, it was always an important part of strengthening the oral muscles.

Sucking, Swallowing, Having Fun: The Diverse Benefits of Straws

Drinking from a straw not only promotes the coordination of sucking and swallowing, but also activates various muscle groups in the mouth and throat area. And guess what? It's also incredibly fun! I mean, who would have thought that a simple straw not only provides a lot of entertainment, but is also good for your health? Children with strengthened oral muscles may even find it easier later on to pronounce some difficult words and letters.

And hey, if you're looking for high-quality drinking bottles and drinking cups with straws or stylish silicone straws, stop by our store or online shop! We have a great selection of drinking solutions that are not only practical but – as we have just learned – also good for strengthening your little ones' oral motor skills.

With this in mind, I wish you and your little explorers happy straw drinking and strengthened oral motor skills for the future,

your Anke from Burgfrollein 🌈
